A client has a Sony VIAO laptop that won’t power on. This is one of the flip-screen laptops that has an internal battery that is not easily replaced. The power brick was working, at least the light came on, and the power light on the laptop came on when the power brick was plugged in.

I found this information:

If you do not turn off your VAIO computer through the normal procedure, the power controller may be suspended due to a program error.Disconnect all cables and peripheral devices, such as the power cord and the USB device, and push and hold the battery off button for three to five seconds with a thin, straight object (such as a paper clip).Wait about five minutes and then put all cables and devices back in place and turn on the computer again.

The hole for the battery off button was on the bottom of the laptop for this model, and was so small I didn’t have a paper clip small enough, so I used a pushpin.  Power disconnect, hold battery off button for 5 seconds, and the laptop powered off.

Remember to regularly back up your computers!  Set up an automated task to do backups at least several times a week.  If you don’t have much data, cloud backup might work for you, otherwise get one or two external USB drives. Two is better, because you can switch them out and “ping-pong” between the drives.  Take the drive that is not in use to a secure location, and switch them out on a weekly basis.

Be safe out there!
